Here are my key, strategic positions on education reform:
- School Vouchers and Choice Program: I strongly advocate for the expansion of school vouchers and have specific plans for the Choice Program. I believe that providing public funding for students to attend private schools empowers parents with more choices and increases competition, ultimately leading to improved educational outcomes.
- Opposition to Common Core: I oppose the Common Core standards because they lower educational standards and impose unnecessary federal control over local education systems. Education standards should be set by local authorities to better reflect community needs and values.
- Fiscal Responsibility: During my campaign for Wisconsin Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2013, I emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility in education. Public schools should maximize the use of existing resources rather than relying on increased funding.
- School Safety: I have proposed practical measures to improve school safety, such as allowing trained, local police officers to provide security in schools. This approach can enhance the safety of students and staff without imposing significant additional costs on school budgets.
- Efficiency in Resource Use: I support policies that encourage efficient use of educational resources. Public schools should focus on improving efficiency rather than seeking additional funding, which leads to better management and accountability.
- Local Control and Restructuring: I advocate for increased local control over education. I propose dividing Milwaukee in upto eight smaller school districts to increase competition between schools, lessen teacher union authority, and eliminate the central office. This restructuring will lead to better management and improved educational outcomes.
- Auditing the Department of Public Instruction: I want to audit the Department of Public Instruction, which has nearly 1,000 employees, to provide transparency and insight into how time and money are being spent. A thorough audit will help identify inefficiencies and ensure that resources are being used effectively to benefit students.
- Audit of Milwaukee's Educational Spending: I aim to audit the quarter-billion-dollar spending by Milwaukee in education to determine if it correlates with actual academic achievement. This audit will help assess the effectiveness of current spending and identify areas for improvement.
Additionally, I currently sit on two school boards: the Hartford K-8 Joint 1 and the Hartford Union High School.
